The pin and tumbler lock is a typical kind of lock that comprises a bible (which houses the springs and driving pins), a plug (which turns with the key), and key pins. However, the bible is the lock component that rotates with the key (pins touched by the key). The driving pins are between the lock’s plug and the bible’s cover.

Driver pins and springs have constant heights, whereas key pins vary. The key pins’ measurements match the key’s grooves, not each other. When put into the plug, the key pins lift the driving pins, compressing the springs. Driver pins are now on the shear line. A shear line separates plug and bible. The key may spin and unlock the lock once the driving pins have reached the shear line.

To pick a lock, the driver pins must be pushed to the shear line on purpose to pick a lock. Usually, a tension wrench and one or two American-sized picks are used. Locksmiths may utilize the picking set.

The tension wrench replaces the teeth (grooves that move key pins) on the key. The keyhole is scraped repeatedly once the tension is adjusted (a process of pulling the pick in and out).

Raking the lock appropriately moves the driving pins. Then, starting with the rear pin, the locksmith works through all the pins (most locks have five pins) (most locks have five pins). After the procedure, the tension wrench may spin the plug like a key, causing no harm to the lock.

A pin-and-tumbler lock may also be opened using a bump key. By adjusting the key pins, a bump key aligns the driving pins with the shear line. When a key is hit (or bumped), grooves allow the plug to be twisted temporarily. Again, the tool functions as a key without damaging the lock.

Drilling the lock may be essential if it’s not a normal pin and tumbler design (like a smart key) or if picking or bumping doesn’t work. However, the drill is aimed toward the pins to drill a hole in the device. The locksmith may unlock the door with a screwdriver after the drill shatters the lock’s pins. Inexperienced drilling may render locks unusable, so avoid it at all costs.

Drilling beyond the pins and breaking the lock’s bolt prevents the lock from retracting; metal particles may lock and jam the pins, preventing them from reaching the shear line, and so on. Other examples: Your facility will be safer if a skilled commercial locksmith performs these tasks.
